Song of the Week #10: Are You Hurting the One You Love?
Notable Performances:One from some time in 2009 with a cowbell in it.One from Brighton in 2009 with some sass and a voice break at the beginning.I always thought Florence and the Machine was a breath of fre- life from all the stuff I had listened to before. It was different enough from all the Rock stuff I had listened to, and all the Pop stuff I thought was horrible, to intrigue me.Are You Hurting the One You Love? is a very good example of this. Obviously it was far from my first experience with Florence, because it is a B-Side hidden very well inside the Rabbit Heart EP.Shame, because this song really punctuates exactly what Lungs Era Florence And the Machine was all about:Eccentricity, dark lyrics and, of course, Florence’s wonderful falsetto with many layers. Are You Hurting the One You Love? Starts out immediately with a lot going on. You have Florence’s backing vocals, drums and a tambourine, with the trademark Florence Bathroom Reverb, the harp, of course, and an electric Piano. Florence’s voice is a bit more restrained in this one, preferring to be a bit less out there, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t go out and throw a third eye at us.The song seems to be about a person who deserts their friends to get into a really fun place, in this case, heaven. But of course, the greedy always need more, and the person complains that he wants more than just a place in heaven.Typical, eh?What do you think of this song? Is it good or is it bad? do you think it deserved a place on Lungs? Tell us in the comments, I’m intrigued.
