Do you think the #santaclara music video by Emily Roberts is divisive and misguided? Why or why not?
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbVHCjArfZUIn short, the lyrics and imagery questions Santa Claus’ role in Christmas and posits that it’s women (helper elves) who make Christmas Christmas by all their effort. (Though this evokes the idea that Santa Claus represents men or patriarchy.)I encountered this music video in the form of a Christmas ad for the supermarket chain Lidl (apparently they pushed out YT internet ads in Germany and other Central European countries). So what do you think about it? Personally I find it needlessly divisive with evoking a “we vs them” mentality, not to mention the stereotypization of women (blatantly with the looks and with the “all women do this” message). While the message that women contribute to Christmas and that this is not prominently acknowledged is worthy, but the form or execution and the idea of using the figure of Santa Claus for a representation of negative masculinity and/or men/patriarchy, who is unworthy of any praise, is in bad taste. I don’t think feminism needs this kind of PR, but ultimately it’s not my decision. What do you think? Thank you for any replies in advance!
