Song of the Week #10: Johnny 99
Week 10: Johnny 99Click the above link to listen to the song – and vote for next week’s song here! The options this time are Factory, Silver Palomino, and Good Eye.”Johnny 99″ appeared as track 4 on 1982’s Nebraska (and is the first song from that album to get a thread.) Since that album’s release, “Johnny 99” has been performed quite frequently, though not consistently: while the song was entirely absent from the TOL Express, 92-93, Reunion, and Magic Tours, and nearly absent from the Rising Tour, it received especially regular play on the Born in the U.S.A., GOTJ, Seeger Sessions Band, and WOAD Tours, and appeared fairly frequently throughout 2012-2014 as well. Most recently, the song was played live a number of times from May to June of this year on the European leg of the 2016 River Tour. So one’s chances of hearing “Johnny 99” vary pretty strongly depending on the tour – but its 387 live plays are enough to set it as the single most-played Nebraska song (even above Atlantic City) and the 30th most-played Springsteen song overall, tied with Working on the Highway.Full lyrics:Well they closed down the auto plant in Mahwah late that monthRalph went out looking for a job but he couldn’t find noneHe came home too drunk from mixing Tanqueray and wineHe got a gun, shot a night clerk, now they call him Johnny 99Down in the part of town where when you hit a red light you don’t stopJohnny’s waving his gun around and threatening to blow his topWhen an off-duty cop snuck up on him from behindOut in front of the Club Tip Top they slapped the cuffs on Johnny 99Well the city supplied a public defender, but the judge was Mean John BrownHe came into the courtroom and stared poor Johnny down”Well the evidence is clear, gonna let the sentence son fit the crimePrison for 98 and a year and we’ll call it even, Johnny 99″A fistfight broke out in the courtroom, they had to drag Johnny’s girl awayHis mama stood up and shouted, “Judge, don’t take my boy this way””Well son you got any statement you’d like to makeBefore the bailiff comes to forever take you away””Now judge, judge, I got debts no honest man could payThe bank was holding my mortgage, they taking my house awayNow I ain’t saying that makes me an innocent manBut it was more and all this that put that gun in my handWell your honor, I do believe I’d be better off deadAnd if you can take a man’s life for the thoughts that’s in his headThen won’t you sit back in that chair and think it over, Judge, one more timeAnd let ’em shave off my hair and put me on that execution line”Below, share any thoughts on, reactions to, or memories of this song, any additional fun facts about it, or any favorite performances!
