Why “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses is the greatest holiday song of all time.
I’m not going to be shy about this: Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses is FAR AND AWAY the greatest Christmas pop song ever recorded (sorry, Mariah).* You may not know it by name, but you know the tune – listen here. It’s also, I think, one of the best ever pop songs full stop. The music itself is of course awesome: a brilliantly catchy chorus, an unmistakeably New Wave vocal style, and one of the snazziest instrumental breaks in all of pop, all rounded out with just enough Christmassy notes to make it clearly seasonal without being cheesy. And yet, it’s the lyrics that make me love this song so much. For a start, they sound so fresh – no awful romantic cliches or out of date references, and it’s hard to believe this was written 35 years ago. On top of that, it’s crammed with fun vivid imagery (“Now the calendar’s just one page”, “the world’s smallest turkey”), with some great throwaway lines (“Bah humbug – no that’s too strong”, “deck those halls, trim those trees.”).Best of all, though, the protagonist of the story seems like a real person, whose problems are annoying but relatable without being melodramatic. Is there some malign force keeping her and Ski Shop Guy apart? No – she had his number but never the time (and by the way, most of ’81 passed along those lines). The two of them are their own people with independent lives. And she’s not lonely this Christmas – she’s had a few cards and a few calls, but she just needs to catch her breath – that’s why she’s doing Christmas by herself this year. And yet, for all the grown up pragmatism here, there’s no brooding cynicism or edge, and there is a happy ending. But it’s not some Christmas miracle from on high. It’s just one of those happy coincidences that make up so many of life’s best moments.*A strong case could be made for Fairytale of New York, but I’m going to say that qualifies as a ballad.
